PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN IN SOUTHMINSTER CHURCH
AN ACTIVE, GIVING AND SHARING ORGANIZATION
OF FAITH AND FELLOWSHIP

WHO ARE PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN?

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN (PW) is a national women's organization open to all women ages 18-90+ of the Presbyterian Church USA who have responded to the needs of the Church and society and who choose to participate in or be supportive of the organization in any way. We have no membership rolls or dues; we seek to faithfully serve God from our corner of the world.

PW is organized at all levels of the PC USA - in congregations, Presbyteries, and Synods as well as the General Assembly.  This connectional system allows ideas and information to continually flow back and forth to strengthen the work of PW and the ministry of the PC USA.

THE PURPOSE OF PW: Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study; to support the mission of the Church worldwide; to work for justice and peace; and to build an inclusive caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church USA and witnesses to the promise of God's kingdom.

THE SYMBOL OF PW is a circular chain of individual broken links, none of which are exactly the same, to represent the individuality of women who are freed in faith. The 3 figures depicted represent all women - it shows the focus of PW which is study, caring, and praising.  The 3 figures also represent the Trinity.

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN IN SOUTHMINSTER
PW in Southminster was founded in 1925 by a group of 16 women from the church. All women in Southminster are members of PW.  Some participate in the general membership, and others are members of one of the circles. Each circle is named after a noted woman in the Bible.

WHAT IS A CIRCLE?
A circle is a small group of women who meet regularly to nurture their faith and participate in fellowship.  Activities include Bible study, mission work, and social events.

PROGRAMS AND EVENTS
Each year PW in Southminster presents a variety of programs, lunches, and outings. Recent activities have included a book review, wreath decorating party, tour of a local synagogue and Peddler’s Pew, which raises funds for mission. In addition to the programs of the PW at Southminster, there are programs sponsored by the PW of Pittsburgh Presbytery and Synod.

PW is a giving organization that supports mission work locally, nationally and abroad through its programs and special offerings which include the Thank Offering, Blanket Sunday, and Fellowship of the Least Coin.

RELATED PW ACTIVITIES
Other women's activities in Southminster include Bible study groups; a quilting group; the shawl ministry; the cross stitch group and an annual retreat to Sandscrest. More information on PW may be found in the PW booklet available from the Church office or in the racks near Fellowship Hall.

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO ATTEND ANY OF THE PW MEETINGS OR FUNCTIONS.

CHRISTMAS FELLOWSHIP
All women of Southminster are invited to join the fun as we gather on Saturday morning, December 3rd to create costumes for the Brookline Boulevard Presbyterian Church children’s Christmas play. We’ll gather in Fellowship Hall at 9:00 am to make simple outfits for Mary, Joseph, angels, wise men, shepherds, and maybe even a few sheep! Presbyterian Women in Southminster has designated the Brookline church as a special mission focus for the year. This will be a caring way for us to share the story of God’s love with these children, some of whom may not have heard the Christmas story before.  No experience is necessary – just willing hands and a holiday spirit. Come for an hour, come for the morning – whatever fits into your schedule. For more information contact Charlotte Stephenson at 412-726-5358 or at stephensoncs@verizon.net

PEDDLER’S PEW
Small household items are requested to replenish the Peddler’s Pew inventory. Items will be available for sale at Presbyterian Women’s events. Proceeds benefit Presbyterian missions. Items may be dropped off in the Church Office.
