Missing

As our family began to think about leaving Malawi and returning to Pittsburgh, we discussed many things, but we eventually put things into three categories: things we will not miss about Malawi, things we are looking forward to back in the USA, and things we will miss about Malawi. So, as we took our last ride in the truck from Zomba to Blantyre, this is what we came up with:

Things We Will Not Miss About Malawi:

  • The dust
  • Minibuses

  • 6 hour Celebrations of worship
  • People staring at us (and sometimes saying, “Azungu” – white person)
  • Bumpy roads
  • Banking that is slow and tedious
  • Walls, locks and security bars on every door and window

  • People begging
  • A language that we do not understand
  • Odors
  • The dirt
  • Smoke and haze
  • Diesel exhaust
  • Slow internet
  • Lack of organization
  • Wasting time
  • Driving
  • Power and water outages
  • Inefficiency
  • Robberies
  • Police road blocks

Things We are Looking Forward To in the USA:

  • Seeing friends and family
  • Real Pizza
  • Driving
  • Fast Food
  • Banking
  • Movies
  • News
  • My Bed and chair and couch
  • Green grass
  • The smell of Spring
  • Fresh, cold, skim milk
  • Snow
  • Rest stops
  • Fall, in all its glory

Things We Will Miss About Malawi:

  • Smiles everywhere you go
  • The people
  • Mangoes
  • MSF (Malawian Food)

  • Rainy Season
  • Our shower

  • Women carrying huge loads on their heads
  • Brightly colored African fabrics and clothing
  • CCAP choirs
  • Lake Malawi
  • The beautiful weather
  • Full churches (jam packed with people)
