"Presbyterians are called to be missionaries right where they live, proclaim the gospel, attend to people's spiritual needs, and work to improve their human condition" - source: PC(USA) website. Southminster has a long history of committed mission.  

Southminster currently has two trips to New Orleans scheduled. The first one, from May 19-26 will be with RHINO.  The second one is from June 16-23, and is open to adults and students that are currently in 8th-12th grade.  Go here for more information.

The following are examples of programs and organizations that receive financial and physical support from this church.

Adult Interest Center  Southminster hosts AIC. The AIC provides programs, lunches and afternoon activities for older adults in Fellowship Hall on most Fridays from September through June. All are welcome!  Its offerings may include entertainment, lectures, Southminster hosts luncheons, line dancing, blood pressure checks, cards, crafts and day trips. Jail Chaplaincy Program

Christian  Associates of Southwest PA Chaplaincy programs in both the Shuman Detention Center and The Allegheny County Prison system bring the healing and restoring presence of Christ to those in prison. website

East End Cooperative Ministry, Inc - One Sunday each month a team of Senior High Students from Southminster cooks breakfast for homeless men at EECM. This organization serves the frail, the homebound elderly, the hungry, the homeless and children and youth in the neighborhoods of East Liberty, Garfield, Lincoln-Lemington, and Larimer by providing urgent necessities such as food and shelter. website

IHN facility

Interfaith Hospitality Network - Southminster is one of the host churches for Interfaith Hospitality Network. IHN is an interdenominational program that links local congregations to offer round-the-clock shelter, meals and social services to homeless families in southern Allegheny County and the Washington, Pennsylvania area. website

Limited Mobility Lending of Medical Equipment - Southminster operates a free "lending library" for people with medical needs. The program accepts donations of unneeded medical equipment in good condition. For additional information, call the church office at (412) 343-8900.

LOGOS at Brookline Blvd. Presbyterian Church - One Wednesday each month, Southminster members provide games, crafts, Christian education and a meal for children in Brookline , in partnership with Brookline Blvd. Presbyterian Church.

Lydia's Place - Lydia’s Place helps female offenders and their children rebuild their lives. website

Neighborhood AcademyThe Neighborhood Academy works to break the cycle of generational poverty through education. It provides a total education for students in grades 8-12 from low income families so that they might become fully productive members of our society.  website

RHINO (Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans) - RHINOIn September and December 2006, Southminster sent volunteers to New Orleans to assist with hurricane recovery. They worked with RHINO, which is a ministry of St. Charles Ave. Presbyterian Church. website

Senior High Mission Trip to Washington D.C. - This summer Southminster high school students worked with the Capital Area Food Bank (website), Community for Creative Non-Violence (website), Food and Friends (website), So Others Might Eat (website),  and Christian Communities Group Homes (website).

MOMS Program Family

Sojourner House - Sojourner House is a faith-based residential rehabilitation facility where addicted women learn to break the inter-generational cycle of poverty and chemical abuse while in their own apartment with their children. website

South Hills Food Pantry - Southminster hosts South Hills Food Pantry.  It provides needed food mainly to the elderly, the disabled and single
mothers.  It serves Mt. Washington, Southside, Mt. Oliver, Arlington, Carrick, Beltzhoover, Brookline, Dormont, Bethel Park and Mt. Lebanon.  If you want to request food for your family, call (412) 343-1779.  If you would like to volunteer or donate food, call the church office at (412) 343-8900.

South Hills Interfaith Ministries - South Hills SHIM food pantryInterfaith Ministries (SHIM) is an interfaith organization, actively extending God's love, with dignity and respect, to the people of the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Current programs include family assistance (food pantry, clothing and small household items, dollar energy screening); counseling site for Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute (individual, group, and family therapy); youth programs (summer recreation programs, early childhood programs, tutoring); interfaith programs (Martin Luther King, Jr. Service, interfaith Holocaust commemoration). website

Additional Mission Involvement - Southminster Presbyterian Church is a member of The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and Pittsburgh Presbytery. Through those organizations Southminster supports additional mission. Read about those mission commitments:
