Pocket Change
Start collecting your change to help the Children’s Choirs of Southminster, Westminster, and Christ United Methodist churches raise money to help the children of Haiti. The Pocket Change collection will be received on Sunday, February 24, when the choirs join together to sing at Southminster during the 11:00 a.m. Celebration of Worship.
The Pocket Change Project began with a very simple goal: to sponsor a child in Haiti for one year. The collections were so successful in 2011 that the goal quickly expanded to try to sponsor 4 to 8 children. They agreed to collect only pocket change. Why? Because people don’t usually think very much about the small coins in their pockets and purses. Added up, however, all those small coins could amount to something significant. So the Cherubs chose to collect them.
The vision for the project was that a handful of small coins – collected by a handful of small children – could affect the life of just one child in Haiti in a tremendous way. That happened on the surface because the efforts of those small children became the efforts of an entire church family, and everyone discovered firsthand that big change starts small. On a deeper level, seeds were planted that are now starting to germinate and grow.
