Music Ministry

Throughout the history of humanity, worship of God has never been separated from music. The very earliest religious rites were accompanied by singing and instruments, and the Book of Psalms (words which we still sing today) is nothing less than an encyclopedia of every kind of sung prayer among God’s people. Music remains central to the life of the church at Southminster Presbyterian. We give glory to God through our singing and playing, both within worship and outside of it. As such, we strive for musical excellence, but just as important is the sense of prayerful community fostered by making music together. Southminster has a long and distinguished musical tradition and we are honored to carry that tradition forward today.

The church community is at the center of our musical life: our volunteer Chancel Choir performs anthems, hymns, and other music weekly at 11:00 worship as well as on holy days and at concerts, supported by the magnificent Southminster pipe organ. The choir is also joined several times a year by a professional chamber orchestra or other instrumental group. The Crossings Band performs contemporary worship music weekly at our 9:30 service as well as on other occasions. Southminster’s historic handbell program, dating back over sixty years, has performed around the area and all over the world; we currently have three active handbell teams (Ringers I, Ringers II and Southminster Handbell Ensemble). Instrumentalists from our congregation also regularly share their talents at worship services. Southminster is also the only church in the area to preserve the tradition of change ringing on our tower bells.

We welcome and encourage participation in our music ministry. If you have any interest in participating in the musical life of SPC in any of the above capacities, or if you would like more information, please contact Director of Music Lucas Barkley at lucas@spchurch.org. No formal musical training or expertise is necessary.
