Upon graduation from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Rev. Dr. Don Ewing was ordained on May 7, 1972; he went on to later complete a Doctor of Ministry degree there as well. He received his first call to serve as Assistant Pastor of the Peters Creek Presbyterian Church in 1972 and went on to serve as Senior Pastor at churches in West Virginia, Pittsburgh and in Lafayette, Indiana. He then made the choice of intentionally pursuing a career in Interim Ministry. His skills in crisis management and extensive interim ministry training provided the foundation for the remarkable path that would follow. In his 50 years of uninterrupted ministry, he has served a total of 16 churches, primarily in the Pittsburgh area. He has served as Interim Pastor for 11 area churches, now including Southminster. He has led congregations through organizational and leadership development, building expansions, program and mission development, healing relationships, and more, as well as enabling congregations to establish a vision and goals for their future.
Dr. Ewing has served the greater Presbyterian community with distinction during his career, including terms as Moderator of the Pittsburgh Presbytery, Chairperson of the Commission on Ministry and the Permanent Judicial Commission and many others. He has served on the planning committee for the General Assembly of the PC(USA), and has been on the Board of Directors of the Interim Ministry Network and as a council member for the Association of Presbyterian Interim Ministry Specialists for the past 24 years.
Most importantly, Dr. Ewing has been married to his lovely wife, Lin, for 54 years. They have three adult children and nine grandchildren of whom they are tremendously proud. The Ewing family has been blessed by the people in the communities they have served. The encouragement and energy they received from faithful congregants have been a source of inspiration for the family. Dr. Ewing’s passion for his family as well as his hobbies and love of laughter have provided his ministry with the balance and support required to sustain diverse challenges.
Throughout his 50 years of ministry, Dr. Ewing’s preaching and teaching has inspired and nurtured many local congregations; his pastoral care has encouraged and helped to heal and strengthen countless individuals; his administrative skills have guided and provided a sense of direction and continuity for our local churches in transition; and his exemplary Christian witness and walk with the Lord has drawn us closer to the peace of God, the presence of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. As we read in Psalm 118:23, “this is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.”
We thank God for Dr. Ewing’s ministry with us during this time of transition. We offer heartfelt congratulations to him and his family for 50 inspired years of ministry. We praise God for blessing us with his faithful leadership and service.
